Meet the Jeweller

Jim Banks is our experienced in-house Jeweller, with almost 30 years’ experience. Jim commenced his career straight from school and has worked for both independent Jewellers and national Jewellers before joining the S Murray team in 2016.
What is the favourite piece of jewellery that you have made and why?

'I made a 18ct Yellow Gold Diamond Bracelet, where I had to individually set 145 diamonds for a customer. The customer requested this at very short notice and I had to complete the work by Christmas Eve as this was a gift. It was a challenge to complete this within such a short timeframe, but it’s one of the pieces I am most proud of.'

What is your favourite gemstone?

'My favourite gemstone is sapphire because of the variation of deep and rich colours available as well as its transparency. Sapphires can be used in a variety of jewellery pieces either on its own or combined with diamonds.'

What advice would you give to someone looking for the perfect diamond?

‘Know the 4Cs – colour, cut, clarity and carat weight. Once you understand this, you then need to decide what is most important to you. I recommend prioritising colour and cut over clarity and carat size.’
